Summary
Viago looks down at Emmrich as his elderly love suffers the illnesses of age. They’ve had this conversation too many times to count, only to eventually come to this very agreement.
“Vi, Dearest.” Emmrich’s voice cracks as his hand comes up to cup Viago’s cheek. “I know it’s hard.” He can see the fear in the older man’s eyes. “But all things must eventually come to an end.” What is this ache in his chest? He wants to crush it under his boot until none remains, but he doesn’t have the strength to do so.

The part of them that’s not quite the same longs for the form that is Viago and longs for the concept that is ‘dad’. They don’t understand what it is that they want.
“Emm-er-ich?” They manage.
“Yes, Rook?”
“What is ‘dad’?”

Emmrich holds Viago tightly. “Are you sure about this? What if something goes wrong?” Viago hits him with that wonderful glare of his. “I’m not going to lose you to something like this.”
“Viago, dearest.” Emmrich runs his fingers through his dearest’s hair in the manner he knows soothes his Crow. “I’ll make it through. I could never leave you behind.” Viago’s glare turns to something much more worried. It warms his heart. “I know you worry, and I would be a fool to claim I’m not scared, but I will come back to you.”
Viago looks down, then away. His brows furrow as he thinks, then turns back to him with determination in his eyes. “You’d better. I’m not in love with an idiot.”

Summary
Viago groans, feeling like he’s been run over by a bronto and thrown off a cliff. He can’t see, but that must just be because there’s something over his eyes. His head aches, and the rest of his body feels half-numb and tingly in the way certain poisons make him feel.
“Viago, Dearest.” Emmrich greets. “Rest. You’ve been through a lot.” A cool hand lands on his forehead. “I’m here. You’re safe.”
“What happened?” He demands. “Why do I feel like I’ve been near fatality poisoned with Numb It All?” He tries to push himself up, only to meet Emmrich’s firm grip on his shoulder, pushing him back down as gently as possible.
Why is Emmrich hesitating? Something’s wrong. “Dearest. I need you to remain calm and listen to me. You were attacked and poisoned. Someone splashed something acidic on your face. You’ve been blinded.”
or
An assassination attempt leaves Viago blinded. Emmrich is there for him.

Viago pulls him in for one last, loving kiss that Emmrich lets linger for as long as he can before Viago dearest grows limp in his arms.
Though his emotions threaten to overwhelm him and a wail rips from his throat, Emmrich watches as the body of his husband begins to cool. After all, watching is all Emmrich has left.

It’s not often that Viago leaves Treviso, especially since the Antaam invaded. He’s barely had the time to speak with Em, let alone spend any time with him. If he cared to speculate, Viago would guess that his never-ending work and the constant furrow in his brow were why Em came up to him to request Viago’s presence on a trip to the Necropolis.
Sure, he wouldn’t have normally found himself in the Necromancer’s paradise, but truly, he would go anywhere with Emmrich.
