Summary
There’s a lot of things that Steve Rogers likes about his Bucky-and-government-enforced retirement in Indiana. He likes the quiet, he likes that Bucky likes the quiet even though he doesn’t think that Bucky’s good enough at accepting that he could have it without strings attached, he likes the geese that he’s taken to raise, after Natasha dropped a clutch of eggs on his porch three days into Bucky’s first undercover mission with Sam and not Steve. Natasha’s dead, but so is Steve, and neither of them are really dead. Natasha’s more dead than Steve, and Natasha saved his life.
The first thing Steve said to her was that she was supposed to be dead, and she made a face like she’d bitten into a whole lemon, and she wasn’t Natasha, because Natasha liked that shit. Natasha always plucked the lemon or the lime out of Steve’s drinks, when they were shooting the shit after missions, and Tony insisted that Steve drank with them, even though alcohol didn’t do anything for him and he felt like they were wasting it on him.
Steve Rogers doesn't leave for the past, but he still gets picked up by the TVA. An alternate Natasha who outlived Clint and swallowed a sun saves his life.

Summary
Sam was the only person she told.
She was sitting cross-legged on his floor, and they’d both decided to stop pretending that they cared about what was playing on Animal Planet. It might’ve been Shark Week. Steve used to like Shark Week and so did Tony. Once, they put it on in Avengers Tower after a gnarly mission. Sam asked Natasha if she wanted to order terrible greasy takeout, and Natasha blurted it out. Bucky was passed out in the guest room, and Natasha said that she was leaving.
“To where?” Sam asked.
“To space,” Natasha answered. “I’m going to go find one of Peter Quill’s friends.”
“When are you going to be back?” Sam asked.
“I don’t know,” Natasha answered.
Natasha, in the aftermath and before of death and not dying and becoming a goddess.

Summary
Natasha doesn’t mean to go. But it’s hard—choking down temptation for an eternity. Her hair’s down to her ankles again, and she lops it off with T’Challa’s disused straight razor, standing in his bathroom, the water frozen yet still fluid as it emerges from the faucet. She reminds herself to turn it off. He’d fallen asleep on his bed while waiting for the bath to fill, and Nakia’s going to walk in right when the bathroom’s already flooded. Now, she’s going to walk in right as it floods, but there’ll be no damage done.
Natasha lays down on her side, on the bed next to T’Challa’s sleeping face and just watches him. She tries to bite down the urge to reach over and poke him awake. All it would take was a flick of her wrist, and he would be alive, meeting her gaze. They could talk. She could ask him whether he’d prefer to be struck down, or to taste it coming. She could be cruel and offer to let him make the choice. She’s already done so many things that she can’t speak of. She wouldn’t flinch if she was doing a favour. Gods don’t.
Natasha's watched everyone die time after time, but it doesn't ever make it easier. Natasha visits T'Challa, knowing this.
