Summary
He’s been so careful lately. Careful not to look too long, not to let his hands linger, not to imagine what it would be like if Buck never moved out again. Careful to keep his words neutral and his tone even, to live in the narrow space between missing and pretending.
But Buck laughs, really laughs, and it’s like air rushing into a room that’s been closed for too long. Eddie feels it flood through him, warm and dizzying. He loves that laugh. He’s loved it for years. And suddenly he can’t remember why he ever thought he could live without it.
Or: Bobby’s gone, Buck moved out, and Eddie’s trying to remember how to keep going.

Summary
Eddie swallows hard. “You’re right here, but it feels like you’re gone. And I don’t know how to fix that. I just… I miss you.”
For a second, Buck doesn’t move. Then his throat works around a swallow. “Eds…” he says softly, like the name itself might break if he’s not careful.
Two of their own are stranded in space, the city is on edge, and Eddie feels like everything is slipping through his fingers.
But in the quiet between sirens, Buck reaches for him and the distance between them finally breaks.

Summary
When Buck and Eddie’s flight home from the Firefighter Games gets cancelled, the only option left is a twenty-seven hour drive back to Los Angeles.
Somewhere between Nashville, and one very small motel room with only a one bed, a line they’ve both been pretending not to see finally disappears.
Turns out the long way home might have been inevitable.
