Summary
Captain Drake has been chosen to lead humanities candidates in their first joint species military exercises. As humanity is seen as aggressive and expansionist, he is determined to see past the racism and ignorance that plagues most of galactic society. Bordered by an antagonistic alien empire known as the Remnant, and with a troubled past with the Alliance, Earth finds itself cast in doubt.
Interdicting an unexpected attack on the Alliance station that was to host the exercises, he witnesses the start of a new war. Nova, of the Alliance, is assigned to Drake’s team as they begin their hunt for answers. Humanities forgotten past will begin to unravel as the long-standing but tenuous peace of galactic society nears collapse and the social stigma and mounting racial tensions that plague both humans and non-humans threaten his relationship with Nova and others. He tries to hold the mission together as alliances, friendships, and his burgeoning romance come to a breaking point.
