Summary
Ximeng remained in the orphanage, bound by its rules, its routines, and its cold protection. Girls only, the Sisters decided, kept safe in their own world of order and discipline. Xiwang was sent elsewhere, to another orphanage, where the priest—his father—still walked among the corridors, still cloaked in respectability, still untouchable. The boy would grow in a world that had already been shaped by sin, power, and secrecy.
— If Ximeng was Eve, then Xiwang was the Serpent, tempting in all his glory.

Summary
That night, after the festival ended and the house settled into sleep, Xiwang packed what little they had. [...]
He woke Ximeng gently with a whispered, “We’re leaving.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere else.”
Xiwang did not say what he was really thinking: that they were going to find him.
That somewhere in the same city—or beyond it—Xitai was still alive. That if they could just reach him, the three of them could leave together. That they could be whole again.
— Ximeng has always known he was different than most kids his age.
