Persepolis Rising really messed me up. Clarissa Mao and Amos Burton are my favourite characters in the Expanse and even though I always suspected that her redemption arc would result in her death, it still didn't make it any easier for me.
Also, after Nemesis Games, I wrote my own take of Clarissa's story arc where she actually gets a happy ending. You can read that in my fic called Redemption. She does not die in that one :'(
The chapters "Farewell: Two To Pick Up" and "Farewell: Caring for Clarissa" were written after I read Persepolis Rising. The other chapters were written after reading Tiamat's Wrath. It took me a long time to process Clarissa's death but now I'm at the point I'm ready to explore a different ending for her that's sort of canon-compliant - but where she lives ...
