Summary
Quaritch enjoys a nice relaxing cup of coffee after delivering his enemy, Jake Sully, to General Ardmore at Bridgehead. Varang is instantly intrigued by the alien smell, however. So Quaritch shares his cup as they are equals after all. But this isn't enough for Varang. And it just gets more out of control from there as Quaritch may not have read the disclaimer label on the coffee in regards to native Pandoran humanoids.
In the end, both Varang and Quaritch get to know each other a lot better.
Also, Wainfleet gets some in the background after Quaritch orders him to.

Summary
Varang slows Quaritch's fall with the wing of her nightwraith and both escape the battlefield. But Varang becomes physically ill shortly afterwards, her encounter with Kiri having more unforeseen repercussions.
Quaritch remains at her side, but now has many problems to face. Strained after the battle, having lost Spider again, and with Varang ill, he now has to deal with a divided Mangkwan clan who are reevaluating their loyalties due to Varang appearing weak. The main opposing faction is lead by Artsut, Tsu'tey's exiled mother, who seems to want to depose and dispose of Varang.
To find his purpose again, Quaritch needs to see his own soul and Varang, even in her weakened state, can help with this. On his journey, Quaritch encounters a vision of Paz Socorro, Spider's mother. But going further down the river of insanity that is his heart, he remembers how an old military rival from his time in Nigeria once provided unusual advice that is now eerily applicable to his present-day situation.
From that moment onward hell is unleashed in the name of twisted paradise and love as Quaritch attempts to restore Varang to her former strength and her rightful position as leader of the Mangkwan clan.

Summary
Quaritch is on a mission for Varang to recruit valuable new members for strengthening the Mangkwan clan. A transponder signal leads Wainfleet and him to a deserted island inhabited by none other than a marooned Devin Mansk. What Quaritch believed to be a simple retrieve and extract mission at best and the capturing of a traitor at worst turns far more complex as Mansk struggles with letting go of both old and new relationships. If it were solely up to Varang, however, the Mangkwan clan would simply assimilate everyone worthy, regardless of their feelings.
