Summary
In the waning hours of a dynasty that has stood for longer than memory, Queen Lillian watches the soldiers at the gates even as she indulges her own desires one last time. Her daughters, Verity and Floria, should be far from the castle by now, out of the clutches of their nation's conquerors: a former slave named Elbrand the Scalebreaker, and his mentor and advisor Ser Taldymire.
