If Joey stayed, he could have found his friends. Could have gone back to Paul’s – if they didn’t stay up all night celebrating, that is. Maybe his dad would have forgotten all this by the time he came back from school the next day.
But Joey didn’t stay. Which is why his phone is snapped in half on the ground by his head, and why his back hits the wall, hard and awkward, and why he’s lying in the corner by the door, winded, for a long while after his dad stomps upstairs.
Corey thinks Joey missed his show.
