Summary
The position of the Fire Lord originated from the head of the Fire Sages who sung to Agni, for Agni was a spirit of song. The position of the Fire Lord was to be the spiritual leader of the nation, the one who was most in tune with the wishes of Agni, and who’s fire was therefore the most holy. The position of the Fire lord was supposed to be the spiritual leader of the nation.
It had not been that way for many years.
(OR, Zuko, in being cast out, brings a hundred years worth of dead soldiers with him)

Summary
It was said that the Airbenders had no family. Their element translated to freedom. Freedom from responsibility. Somehow that gave them the right to take from other nations, to abandon their children to strangers. Lackadaisical children grew into lackadaisical adults. They only cared about their own freedom. Selfish, they were called. The Fire Nation thrived on loyalty. Piety. Filial dedication. Zuko had never been good at any of the three—here he was, thousands of ri away from home, out hunting a legend for his Nation. The Airbenders had threatened the children of Agni once. Never again. Sozin had made sure of that. Zuko had the proof in front of him. Hundreds of corpses of selfish, loveless people who abandoned their children.
(Zuko visits the Southern Air Temple. His fire is still out.)
