Kodai has always been afraid of drowning. There's no real basis for it. No trauma he can point to and say: 'This! This is why I'm like this.' He's just... scared. Knowing this, he'd agreed to go to the beach with his friends anyway.

He’s praying she won’t say something like: ‘I care about you.' Her actions all suggest it and are all already putting her at risk, but saying as much would be a death sentence. It would force him to acknowledge the warmth she’s provided him and, in doing so, snuff it out.
Instead she says, “Your heart is begging to live, Arisu.” She glances pointedly at their joined hands, at the way he’s squeezing hers so tightly his knuckles ache. He tries to pull away, but she doesn’t let him. “This might be your solution. Don’t turn away from it just because you’re afraid of disappointment.”
