There is a ghost leading Haru around Nagasaki; a version of the person he’s reaching for that doesn’t only live in his head.
If he doesn’t look that close, if he turns his eyes to the terrapins, he can pretend the presence next to him—hesitantly taking his hand to carefully step onto the stone—is the person he’s truly looking for. Fuzzy and just slightly off, but he can gloss over the imperfections in his vision if he tries.

The Deep Dark Wood is as peaceful as its name makes it out to be: that is, not at all.
Oliver would like to go back to Motorville. Safe, clean Motorville, with flat roads and concrete underfoot—though from Drippy’s startled shriek when a car got just too close when they were on their way to the town square, maybe the dangers there are just the ones he’s used to.
...No, he takes it back. This is much worse, he thinks, as a small creature with giant leaves for hands rustles its way out of the bushes in front of him, makes a tiny squeak, and then dives for his ankles as he yelps and tries to back away.

Summary
Dark and foreboding, the castle sticks out of the skyline like a sore thumb, only just visible through the haze of purple mist. He traces bright orange lines zig-zagging up it, reaching up spires and spikes that otherwise look like shadow against the mountain range backdrop, somehow looking more like liquid than the lake in front of it. If he closes his eyes and listens, under the birdsong, he can find thunder from the permanent dark clouds above the lake, threatening and sinister.
Oliver stares at the shape of it in the mountains and wonders if navigating it will be easier than they think.

“People do this all the time,” he groans, giving an overexaggerated gesture with his sword. “You know. Training together—sparring. Hell, we saw those trainees doing it earlier today, remember?”

Faint screams echo around him, from far off, away from the worst of it all; the only ones still here are the culprits, and the dead bodies littering the streets.

Kino’s uncharacteristically sharp tone makes Natsumi all but drop the ice pack she’s holding, fumbling with it as she loosens her grip on Endou’s bruised hand. He doesn’t say anything, barely even makes a noise, but she can feel the tension in his body lessen a little, and so she mumbles an apology. He does hiss a little when she puts the ice back on, and she doesn’t apologise for that. Instead, she grits her teeth, and stares at his hand instead of his face, wishing she were doing something more active than holding an ice pack so that she could stop her mind racing with fury.
