Summary
Makino still feels like she’s being watched.
It started with her trip to the market, and has kept on all through the afternoon and evening, through her hours spent running the bar and especially now, after her patrons have left, and it’s just Makino alone tidying up for the night. She feels like a mouse in the middle of a freshly harvested field, trying to focus on gathering up fallen seeds, but constantly glancing up at the sky to check for a circling hawk.
I believe that you’ve mistaken me for someone else
She certainly did. Shanks could never sound that cold and sharp, cutting through her delight like a falling sword. The resemblance truly was uncanny, though, and left Makino with a sense of foreboding that made it hard to get any sleep.

Garp handles the matter with all his usual tact - which is to say, ignoring the matter until it really can’t be anymore, Makino seven months along and waddling more than walking at this point. And then he just comes out with it, when the two of them are alone in the bar, tables wiped down and the floor swept after closing.
“No,” she answers honestly. Green hair might be preferable, true, but- at least red won’t be an indication one way or the other.

His face turns as bright red as his shirt, and the boy grumbles a complaint about ‘sappy shit’, which makes Makino laugh. A year ago, she doesn’t doubt that the crib (if not the entire ship) would have been turned into kindling by the angry, pain-filled child who hated any mere mention of Gold Roger. But Ace has come a long way, since then. Since he started calling Luffy and Sabo his brothers, and opening up his heart. Since he willingly set foot on the Oro Jackson, and started calling her ‘home’.
Makino is still smiling, pleased and proud, all the way to Party’s Bar, up the front steps and in through the door.
And there, her world cracks in half.
He’s back.
He’s-

“One what,” Shanks asks, catching Shamrock’s next blow and locking their swords, delaying disengagement for a few seconds of being practically face to face. “What in the world are you talking about?”
“The pet you left behind on that East Blue backwater!” It comes out rough, far less composed than Shamrock would like, but getting to actively see the blood drain from his brother’s face is entirely worth the break of composure.
