"This Monday?" said the Archivist, his voice strangled, before snapping out of his shock. "That's way too soon! And you can't just make these decisions without consulting me!"
"Oh?" said Miss James. "And here I thought I was the one in charge."
"It's my Archives!" he shrieked.
"And last I recall, you are an employee of my Institute. Anything that is under your direction is under mine."
Miranda watched them bicker with a mix of alarm and interest. This wasn't supposed to happen at job interviews, right?

Or: Miranda is an Eye-aligned little bean, and the Institute gives her a place to belong, I guess (how does one boil down a character's story, eh? Writer problems...)

She remembered the Archivist to have been much the same: a stuck-up little man, all high and mighty and safe at the top of his ivory tower, who only had eyes for his paper files and that freaking tape recorder he insisted on using.
But that is not whom she saw sitting at the Archivist's desk.
"You look different," she commented brusquely.

Or: Melanie's old channel is done for, but that doesn't mean she has to give up on ghost hunting. Just as her current investigation stalls, the Archivist calls her in an attempt to make amends. He's...changed, but she can't make up her mind on whether that's a good or a bad thing.
