Ray’s head lolls onto Pete’s shoulder, limp and pale but still breathing, eyelids still fluttering. And Pete’s tired, worn down from days of walking but he’s still strong and steady enough to take Ray in his arms and carry him like a bride on her wedding night.
“Your prize, Mr. McVries.” The Major declares. “Mount him on your wall, take him to the hospital, piss on his corpse, it doesn’t matter. He’s all yours now.”

A waiter glides up to them, carrying a silver tray laid with delicate looking pastries topped with swirls of white foam and spilling with tiny, glittering fish eggs. Ignoring Ray, the waiter holds the tray up to Pete.
Don’t eat anything, Ray begs him silently, chest tight with horror. He thinks of the old book of Greek myths his father had read to him, of Persephone who was condemned to the underworld because she ate a handful of pomegranate seeds.
