He's not sure when exactly he'd found that out. That it works so well. Handling the men like- oh, he doesn't know how to describe it. Like a parent might handle a child, putting his hands on them steadily, closely.
Maybe it was when Jopson combed his hair while he was mad and sick with alcohol withdrawal, and it was the only slightly good thing about his waking hours. Maybe it was when he cleaned the dirt out of Jopson's face while he was... Dying.
And it doesn't help that Fitzjames constant eye contact seems to urge him on. Like he's trying to draw him back there by just looking. Like he's trying to read his mind.
"Oh, you're..." He mutters, again without really knowing what he's saying. "You're killing me, James. You know that?"

Summary
Once, Francis Crozier and Fitzjames had been friends. Closer than friends. As close as any two men could be.
Now, the people James are talking to don't bother to glance in his direction. As if they no longer go together, their relationship to one another being only in the strange coincidence that they were shipwrecked on neighbouring ships. They're all busy entertaining his stories...
What stories they must be.
