Mingi doesn't know what the outside world looks like, but he knows that every five days is another possibility of losing his life. The Funhouse Facility is the only place he and his peers have ever known after waking up, and training to fight each other to the death each week is all they do. When they never know who is going to live or die, building emotional connections is one of the most foolish things they can do; escape is even more so. And yet, the imprisoned youths can't help themselves.
