Summary
"You’re overwhelmed,” Stratt said. There wasn’t any heat, any emotion behind the words. She was staring at him, hands clasped in front of her. She looked intense, as always, except she also looked soft. Her gaze was almost gentle, except it still had that underlying need for efficiency, that dry necessity everything Stratt did was tainted by.
Grace stared at her, gripping his shoulders with his hands so hard his nails were painfully digging into flesh.
“What do you want to do about it?” he bit out, more defensively than he’d intended. She’d use that against him. She was good at that.
Stratt shrugged. She had that same expression on her face she always had, something oddly sad and solemn for a resting face.
“I have tea and hot chocolate. I hear Americans like hot chocolate,” she said. She held his gaze for a moment more. She looked away slowly, eyes tracing the shape of the laboratory windows. “If you come with me, you can have some.”
____
Grace is overstimulated, and Stratt only wants to make up for the fact that she made her scientist inefficient in the first place.

Summary
“I’m so far from reasonable right now, you could do almost anything to me and I’d accept it if it helped,” he said honestly.
She breathed in.
“I’m worried about that, in a way—”
“Stratt,” she looked at him. “Hand feed me oatmeal if you think it will make me sleep. Seriously.”
She considered his words for a few seconds. Grace squirmed, unsettled.
Her hesitation fell away, slowly but steadily.
“Okay.” Then, just in case. “But you have been warned. This isn’t me trying to undermine you.”
____
Grace couldn't sleep. He was desperate, and Stratt...
She was his only option left.

Summary
“I’m scared,” he said. Eva nodded, resting a hand on his cheek. Still stoic as ever, always the same, unchanging, unwavering. He breathed easier at the thought.
“It is scary. But I can guarantee you it will be taken care of, manneke. Nobody will hurt you.”
He closed his eyes to blink, but found the darkness beneath a comfort, enough to wait a few seconds to open them again.
“Promise?” he asked her.
Eva froze, though only for a fraction of a breath. Then she smiled again, her eyes bearing all the weight of her words.
“I promise.”

Summary
“You’re making a good choice,” he said to her, hushed like she always spoke to him in the dark.
He felt the vibrations of her voice through her shoulder, in his jawline and cheekbone.
“What choice?”
“I don’t know,” he adjusted his position, leaned the book on his legs. “I respect you too much and don’t know you enough, to think I know what you’re going to do. But it will be the right thing.”
She sighed. Her breath shuddered.
“Good and right aren’t the same thing.”
“I know,” He risked it and put his hand over hers. She responded with a twitch of her fingers. “I don’t know if all your choices have been good. I spent a lot of time wanting to tell you they were horrible; I’m not so sure now. I think most of them were both. Good and right.”

Summary
He trusted her. He wanted to help her.
She tried to make herself believe, again, that this was ill advised. That it would sabotage the project.
She was steadier, had better concentration. She could afford to spend a few hours only thinking of a single other human being who needed help with meeting his needs, and who then would look at her with that stare, that utterly and honestly impressed gaze. She could hardly bare it, most times. It was too much trust, and it scared her still. She wasn’t scared of the world trusting her, because she didn’t doubt that she was competent and driven enough to see the Hail Mary through. But this man, a single person, not a number, not a vague recollection, giving her that same magnitude of trust, was unsettling.
She had gotten attached, it was undeniable. It was helping. Perhaps, it would be the thing that carried the project to its end.
_____
Eva Stratt can't afford to be friends, especially not with a man whom she sometimes only tolerates for his scientific knowledge. She can't.

Summary
And he had a name.
“Doctor Ryland Grace!” he exclaimed.
He put them both down on the board. Eva—did he call her Eva?
He gave up and wrote her whole name next to ‘mystery woman’. It wouldn’t hurt to remember her surname, in any case, he thought.
He smiled and wrote RYLAND GRACE at the top of the board.
He clasped his hands in front of him.
“Okay. I’m starting to look like a person. I’m somebody!”
____
Ryland Grace, though he didn't know his name, woke up alone and afraid. Things didn't really get better after that.
Not until he met a friend.
