Summary
He resolved right then and there that he would not find himself as naive and inconsiderate as Epimetheus. Never again. Instead he would remake himself into Prometheus. Forethought. A man who would not be caught unawares again, one who would act without letting himself be deluded to the reality of his circumstances. When next James chose to go for the fire, he would not be taken aback by the eagle’s arrival, he would instead be prepared for it. He would be sure to conceal a set of lock-picks before finding himself in a position to be chained down. He would be armed and ready to defend his liver from voracious, aquiline beaks.
But before that, he would indulge himself in one last spontaneous, reactive impulse, unfettered by the cool rationale of reason. Like Pandora herself, James would choose to open the box again, even when knowing about the evils and malices it had unleashed upon him the first time around.
(Not exactly set in the Young Sherlock storyline, but 100% based on Dónal Finn’s brilliant portrayal of Moriarty)
A look at what lead Professor Moriarty away from a life of lawful academia and set him on the path toward becoming the Napoleon of Crime.

Summary
James then used his free hand to pluck the glass of whiskey from Sebastian’s unresisting fingers, squeezing the back of his neck ever so gently, just enough to make him open his eyes. Of course, they only fluttered open about half of the way, sliding over to look at James from beneath a short fan of dark blond lashes. They were dazed looking, and dark with desire, but still veiled by uncertainty.
His brow was furrowed with confusion, and a wariness that James would have to be very careful to soothe away before things went much further. The confusion was alright, could be tempered and managed, but the wariness had the potential to ruin everything if it was permitted to take root.
(Can be read as a stand alone, but the first part of the series gives you some of my backstory for this version of Moriarty. Based on the Young Sherlock character/Dónal Finn’s portrayal, but diverges from that storyline.)

Summary
Since he had returned from his business earlier in the day, James’ eyes hadn’t given a single thing away. Sebastian might as well have been trying to glean traces sentiment from spilled drops of ink, or carvings hewn from jet. In fact, the more one tried to peer into the depths of James, through the so-called windows of the soul, the more likely they were to be thwarted by their uncanny mirroring. The way his eyes could show a reflection of whatever one might have expected to find beneath their surface, without actually breaking through it. Something that ought to have been as fragile as glass, but that was somehow more impenetrable than adamant.
(Technically could be read as a stand alone, but makes more sense in context with the rest of the series.)

“My fault just as well.” The man offered, accepting the return of his fallen cane and extending a hand to shake in turn. “William Saltsbury.”
“James Moriarty.” He answered, letting his accent curl particularly thickly around the vowels of his surname, drawing it up into a true rolling lilt in the middle.Saltsbury’s brows rose a fraction and he blinked, when James shook his hand firmly. People tended to assume he was English in circles such as these, at least until he opened his mouth. Not surprising, he supposed, considering they were currently in England and people from Ireland didn’t often walk in the same social circles as the more affluent.
“Don’t worry.” James chuckled, glancing around to make sure there was nobody else in easy earshot. “I’m not one of the Irishmen you’ve evicted recently.”Series

James tasted like the warm, peat-smoke of whiskey and the raw, sanguine claret of unsatiated appetite. Sebastian was utterly helpless to him, pinned between the force of his attention and the unyielding door at his back. He was at James’ mercy, and there seemed to be none on offer.
(Technically could be read as a stand alone if you’re only interested in the “action”, so to speak, but it makes quite a few references to the previous instalments in the series and will make more sense having read those.)

Summary
Sebastian’s shoulders were slumped in a way that made him look to be buried under his coat, rather than wearing it. His hands were clenching and unclenching at his sides, as if he were restraining the urge to reach out. His mouth opened and closed slowly as if he kept swallowing back words before they could cross his lips. This wasn’t at all what James had been anticipating from the man’s return.

Summary
Sebastian wanted to interject, but didn’t dare. Not yet. Instead, he brought one of James’ hands up to his mouth and pressed a series of kisses along the heel of his palm, and then over the thin, tender skin and delicate ligaments of his inner wrist. His pulse was beating away just under the surface, hot and steady. The even, driving tempo of a war-drum.
The man had fine hands, clean and well groomed. Sturdy and capable, but also with long, elegant fingers. It was the fingers Sebastian kissed next, as James continued talking, passing his lips across each knuckle and joint in turn.

“You’re an idiot.” Sebastian declared.
James went still in his arms, not even breathing, it seemed, for long moments. He almost wished he could’ve seen his face, since it likely would’ve made for quite a sight. For a while, the only sounds were the lashing rain, the howling wind, the rumbling of thunder, and the crackling of the fireplace.
“I don’t think anyone’s ever called me that before and meant it.” James replied at last, sounding utterly bewildered.
“Aye, well, nobody else knows you like I do, do they?” He countered, attempting to ease the sting of his earlier declaration with a soft kiss pressed to the hinge of the man’s jaw.Series

Summary
Sebastian’s brow was still furrowed, and there was a sympathetic tilt to his head. The steel that had been in his gaze earlier had softened.
“I think you’ve a touch of fever, Love.” The man declared, almost cautiously. “Do you feel well?”James shook his head. Sebastian tutted fretfully, but his hands remained gentle, and James let himself lean into them once more. His thumb began stroking over the crest of James’ cheek, a soothing back and forth motion that almost had him closing his eyes again.

Summary
He remembered feeling the bright-eyed eagerness of the newly promoted, but unlike this Captain, he had been raised as the son of a prominent diplomat. He’d grown up in this kind of environment, and had known better how to not be so obnoxious in his exuberance. Lessons learned well before he’d been old enough to start shaving.
Not that he did that anymore, but he did keep his beard short and tidy. He might’ve removed it for tonight if he’d been a better son. But he wasn’t, and he hadn’t, so the beard itched now, in combination with his uniform collar.

He truly didn’t know this man. Could barely claim to have met him before today, but James had insisted his brother could be trusted, prior to absconding with the man’s child, leaving Sebastian with nothing but his brief word to rely on.
Sebastian had no choice but to trust him, or else he’d be sickened with terror.
