Ace has one shot. One more chance and it's then it's over. He tries his best to contain his filth and wrongness, but it's never enough. And like they had fun together. And like they’d managed to figure it all out. Their father wasn’t upset at him like his own was. How did they do it? “The salt and pepper. I know. I gave them to Luffy.” Ace walked out of the house, big bowl of potato salad in hand as Luffy tottled after him with the salt and pepper, as asked. Sabo had meekly set the plates out on the blanket out side and curled up between Luffy and Ace’s spot. The kid didn’t like to be near him if he could help it. That was one thing that was different. His progress was…slower than Ace’s. He was less trusting, less needy. And maybe that was part of his upbringing. Just another fucked up part of his life. Don’t be needy. Don’t be a kid. Don’t be human.
Ace had, as soon as he realized exactly what human kindness and affection was, melted into it fullheartedly but Sabo? It was like he knew what it was and thought it was wrong.
