Summary
“Shapiro says that every project I work on I adopt an introvert. I guess you’re my adopted introvert. Congratulations or my condolences, you let me know which is correct.”
“Unfortunately that seems to be how I make all my friends.” Simon admitted.
“Congratulations?” Ryland tried playfully. “So we’re friends?”
“Sure.” Simon relented. He was drawing Ryland while the scientist worked, they were at least acquaintances.
“Ok, if we’re friends then I need to know more about you.” Ryland decided.
Simon really should have thought about his answer before just agreeing with Ryland. Ryland was nice and he just wanted to know the man he’d been talking to non stop for days now. Ryland was harmless, he liked people, he wanted to get to know Simon. It was harmless.

The first time Simon meets Ryland Grace is when he volunteers to babysit a the handful of scientists that the Iron Lung Diving Group has brought in to handle an issues with some contaminated oil his team had found when they started working on their next project. (Prequel to Pressure)

“Hi. I’m calling for Dr. Ryland Grace?”
“Speaking.”
“This is Ava from Iron Lung Diving Group. Are you somewhere you can speak privately for a few minutes?”
“Is Simon ok?”
“Simon Grace is alive. He sustained a serious injury while working. Our medical team is with him now and he will be brought back to the surface pressure as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Simon is a saturation diver who gets injured on the job. Ryland is a school teacher who gets the call he always feared one day after work. His husband is injured, and due to his work, he can't get to a hospital right away. It will be five or six days before they get the chance to see each other face-to-face. At least Rocky and Adrian are there to get him though the week.

Ryland found the emptiest spot he could and dropped down onto a couch, pulling out his phone and opening the “Simon Support Group Chat.”
Ryland: He’s just gone back for surgery. They’re going to amputate his arm.
Typing out the words hurt like a knife to the heart. They had all known it was coming, but it hadn’t been reality yet. Now it was.

Reuniting in a hospital 5000 miles away from home was perhaps the greatest reliefs Ryland and Simon had ever felt. Following an accident that crushed his left arm while working as a saturation diver, Simon is taken to the hospital for treatment. Ryland is already there, having flown halfway across the world, to be with his partner and support him. However surgery is only the first step to Simon's eventual recovery.
