"What?"
"What's that behind you?" she murmured, her eyes now fixed on the flying bison, which was still keeping a respectful distance.
"That's Appa, my flying bison," he replied.
She looked at the animal for a few more seconds and then her gaze returned to the boy in front of her. "Can I ask you something else?"
"...Yes?"
"Can we go for a ride with Appa?" she asked suddenly, her tone cheerful and hopeful.
Aang blinked, visibly confused. "Uh, sure... I guess..."

"Are you dreaming again about forgetting your pants? Or about not studying for the math test?" the waterbender joked, hoping to lighten the mood, and you could say she succeeded, because he laughed.
"No, no, no," Aang shook his head, finally raising his gaze with a weak smile.
"Then... what have you been dreaming about?" the woman asked again. "Is it about the war... or the air nomads?"
"I haven't dreamed so much about the things that happened in the war... and I think I'll keep dreaming about my people until my last breath," the airbender murmured softly. "But these last few have been about what happened on Sonam Island..."
"Aang, we've already talked about this. None of what happened there was your fault," Katara reminded him gently.
"No, it was my fault. If I hadn't been so selfish, you wouldn't have..." He swallowed. "Y-you wouldn't have..."

"I like women." The room fell silent, and Kya closed her eyes, wanting to avoid the look of disgust that was surely reflected on her parents' faces. She heard footsteps; Bumi had left. But before she could think about that, other arms wrapped around her, and when she opened her eyes, she knew whose they were by the blue arrow tattoos etched into his skin.
Aang hugged her tightly to his chest, tears streaming down his face as well. He was smiling. "It seems we have something else in common."
She gasped for breath, processing those words, and finally collapsed into her father's arms, sobbing. She felt two hands on her back and, trembling, turned to look at her brothers. Bumi seemed proud, his eyes glistening with emotion. Tenzin was still young, but old enough to understand what was happening, and he gazed at her with happiness.
But someone was missing. Kya's gaze swept the room until it finally found her mother, in the same spot where she had been since she had decided to speak. She wasn't looking at her; instead, her attention was fixed on the floor, her brow furrowed. And she felt her heart shatter into tiny pieces.
