Galina had suggested an exercise. Ilya had gotten off track—sort of, he wasn’t entirely sure what on track was, for therapy—and ranted about Alexei for twenty straight minutes. Galina had asked if he felt like he had closure with his brother. Ilya had ignored the part of himself that wanted to scoff at a term like closure, and said well, yes, last time I saw him, I told him to fuck straight off, and I have not seen him since. And Galina had looked at him for a moment and said, do you still feel like there are things you wanted to tell him?

Shane didn’t need therapy. He already knew what was healthy. Right? Right. He was fine. His relationship with his parents was completely uncomplicated.
On the other hand, he had a fucking lot to say to Ilya’s family. Who he would never meet. Irina and Grigori, because they were dead, and Alexei, because Ilya had cut him off.
Closure, then. Perfect. The exercise applied to Shane, too. He didn’t need a therapist, he could just secretly steal Ilya’s.
