Summary
"Just get on with it and stop…" Soyona had trailed off, her last words quieting into a murmur, just to herself now, of realisation, and Brooklynn's teeth hurt from the force of how hard she grit them. "Wasting our time."
Brooklynn was out of time.
She was out of time, all of them were out of time, had been out of time for far too long. The Intelligence were taking far too long, their plan about to fall through the cracks far too soon, and the sand in the hourglass was slipping through like water, and it was not a game, it never had been, but Brooklynn was about to lose—
"Fuck," Brooklynn said to herself, watching, blearily, the raised palms of Darius, the low, soft tone of his voice, as though trying to soothe a wild animal. He wasn't far off. "Fuck," she said again and, bracing herself on one foot, she whirled around, laser trained on Soyona, red as a perfect spot of blood on her white suit and Soyona's eyes were wide, so wide, and her lips were curling up into a snarl, a wild thing, all teeth, and Brooklynn thought of the television and shattered glass and Brooklynn's throat was dry and Soyona lunged, and the hourglass ran out, Brooklynn was out of time.

Summary
"Hey, no, look at me," Yaz requested, though the glimmers of a demand crept through her tone. "Look at me." With effort, Brooklynn dragged her gaze to meet Yaz's. "You had to. The Broker was…" Yaz searched for an appropriate descriptor.
"Dangerous," Darius supplied. "Evil."
"Yes," Yaz agreed, and Brooklynn felt something stick stubbornly in her throat. She tried and failed to swallow around it. She wished, suddenly, for the tea, if only to have something to wash it down. "You did what you had to."
"Hm," Soyona said, plastering her front to Brooklynn's side. Her cold fingers curled in the short strands of Brooklynn's hair, sending ice down her spine. "Do you hear that, Brooklynn? You killed the big bad evil. Sounds like you're a hero."
Brooklynn could feel the nausea slowly scrabbling its way up her throat. She closed her eyes against it. She tried to manage a hum of acknowledgement. It came out strangled.
"And what a good job you've done," Soyona continued, into her ear, teeth dragging down the curve of the shell. "Well done, hero. You make such a pretty little murderer."
