"And you know there's only one way to send me back, Ryujin. Make a deal with me."
"I'd rather kill myself, thanks," Ryujin grumbled as she set the chalk and candles down with more force than needed at the till.
"Um… are you okay?"
Ryujin blinked. Shit. She'd forgotten about other people being a thing. She'd been holed up in her shitty fucking apartment with a shitty fucking demon for far too long. Three weeks too long. She knew better than to ask if the poor guy at the counter could see Sayeon. "Yep," she said, nudging the chalk forwards slightly. "Doing great. You?"
The cashier smiled with a somewhat forced affect. "I'm okay. Uh… any special occasion?"
Ryujin raised an eyebrow. Looked down at her meagre selections. Chalk and candles. "Sure. Exorcism."
The cashier perked up, eyes brightening. "Ooh. Are you a professional?"
Ryujin eyed her blackboard chalk and off-brand candles. She spared Sayeon a brief glance. She was looking at her with clear bemusement. "Sure am."

Summary
Juni had known from the very beginning that rooming with Yesol Na would lead to nothing good. She'd known it, but she'd also looked at the figures of her rent, looked back at Yesol, and said, "Sure, why not."
It wasn't that Yesol was a stranger. She was a friend of a friend, sure, but not a complete stranger. Juni had never had any lectures with her, sure, but she'd vaguely seen her on the football pitch a few times. Juni's issue with Yesol had never been the simplicity of not knowing her. The problem, really, was that Juni had looked her in the eye and known beyond a shadow of a doubt that they simply wouldn't work in the same space.

"Hi, P'Wik," Chay greets, setting his bag down on the floor. "Long day?"
Predictably, P'Wik says nothing in reply.
"School was normal, I guess," Chay continues. "I ended up out longer than I'd expected, though." It is nearly dark outside, shadows clouding over the sky, slowly swallowing the light of the sun whole. "Didn't really feel like coming home. It's just so empty, you know?"
P'Wik stares back at him from his many perches on Chay's wall. Chay smiles helplessly.
"Am I losing my mind?" he asks the little shrine. The shrine says nothing back. The largest of the photos, framed, sunglasses shadowing P'Wik's eyes, does not even smile. It seems like answer enough.

"Hey, no, look at me," Yaz requested, though the glimmers of a demand crept through her tone. "Look at me." With effort, Brooklynn dragged her gaze to meet Yaz's. "You had to. The Broker was…" Yaz searched for an appropriate descriptor.
"Dangerous," Darius supplied. "Evil."
"Yes," Yaz agreed, and Brooklynn felt something stick stubbornly in her throat. She tried and failed to swallow around it. She wished, suddenly, for the tea, if only to have something to wash it down. "You did what you had to."
"Hm," Soyona said, plastering her front to Brooklynn's side. Her cold fingers curled in the short strands of Brooklynn's hair, sending ice down her spine. "Do you hear that, Brooklynn? You killed the big bad evil. Sounds like you're a hero."
Brooklynn could feel the nausea slowly scrabbling its way up her throat. She closed her eyes against it. She tried to manage a hum of acknowledgement. It came out strangled.
"And what a good job you've done," Soyona continued, into her ear, teeth dragging down the curve of the shell. "Well done, hero. You make such a pretty little murderer."

Summary
Michel was going to do something drastic, she decided. She hadn't quite decided what, but it would be drastic.
Perhaps it was time for her to admit that she was not cut out to be a farmer. Perhaps she should have admitted to that a long time ago. Every farmer's daughter a farmer did not make, and Michel was perhaps long overdue a career change.
It was rather unfortunate that Michel did not find herself particularly inclined to giving up.
It wasn't that she loved the work; it was gruelling, and her back ached, and the meagre sprouts of her crops brought her only a perfunctory sort of satisfaction. It was simply that she hated the idea of throwing her hands up in the air and admitting that a measly patch of vegetation had bested her.
It followed, then: if Michel wasn't getting the yield she needed, and she wasn't about to switch professions, then something needed to change.

"Did you ever love me?"
Kim forced himself to breathe evenly. It was getting progressively harder. Chay tugged at his wrist, holding onto Kim with both of his hands, and something had begun to scrape along the inside of Kim's throat.
"Phi," Chay said, insistent, and it caught somewhere between a plea and a demand, and Kim turned as though Chay had gotten hold of his chin and tugged. Kim's breath built and built and collapsed somewhere down his throat. Chay's eyes were brimming, red lining them, and his shoulders were heaving with every breath. Kim could see the damp tracks his tears had already taken. Kim felt sick. His throat burned with it.
It shouldn't be this way, he thought suddenly. It shouldn't be this way. Chay should never have gotten involved with Kim, should never have been targeted because of Porsche, should never have been dragged screaming and blind into a world he clearly did not belong in. It didn't matter. This was how things had turned out, and now all Kim could do was make sure Chay did not look back when he got the chance to run.

Mint looked out at the road as he waited for Dove to drive by to pick him up from school. Fourteen years old, now, and they'd figured out how to remove the plant from the top of his head with hardly a pinch of pain, so he could feel the chill of the breeze ruffling his hair. He had grown taller, too, hit something of a growth spurt— or sprout, maybe; Mint wasn't sure what was the scientifically accurate way of describing his development— which was still a bit disorientating. The world had grown smaller over the years.
Smaller, and stranger.
Mint blinked. He blinked again.
Mint was seeing things. He knew he was. He had to be. He had to be, because that was— that was his mom. Not the mother-in-limbo that Dove was, but Mint's actual mom, the mom that had raised Mint, had loved him. Her thick hair drawn back into a bun, her coat dark, her skirt brushing her ankles, the lines of her face creasing around a familiar smile. That was Magnolia Faragher, and Magnolia Faragher was—

A new job. A new world. A new life. A new start.
Emma had promised herself so much. Emma had promised herself too much. What the hell had she been expecting? The city was a large, large place, and she was only a small speck of dust within it, and it was always going to swallow her whole.
If even someone like Zhu Ye could be conquered so easily, could find himself caught between the jagged jaws of the city in the blink of an eye, Emma had never stood a chance.

Summary
Alle stifled a sigh as she was herded into the fitting room.
Funny how it always worked out. She was the extra child, the ignored child, the forgotten child, until the family decided she wasn't, and then she would be again until she caught on their next little whim.
"Princess," one of the maidservants said, bowing her head. Alle nodded and took position, arms stretched out by her sides, ready to be pinned up and strangled by fabric that would twist and turn until it made something unrecognisable of her. Perhaps Alle could filch a pin, a needle, something small and sharp. "The head seamstress is unfortunately unavailable today," the maidservant continued, head still bowed, not looking at Alle. Alle couldn't find it in herself to hold back her eye-roll. Of course their seamstress wasn't available on the very day her fitting had been planned. What a coincidence.
"Alright," Alle said, and saw the girl flinch at her tone. "So who's doing my fitting?"
The maidservant, if possible, bowed her head even lower. "She's… she's a new hire, your highness."

Summary
Michel had been dormant a long time, simply drifting within the lake, as part of the lake. It had been a peaceful few millennia or centuries or decades— time had no true meaning or passage as water— and Michel did not feel particularly inclined to be roused from it.
The problem with pesky little knights was that they did not care what faeries of the lake wanted.
Michel had risen, blearily, and eyed the knight somewhat sceptically. She was not the usual ilk, her hair far wilder, her eyes brighter, and the smile on her lips was certainly far more wolfish. The knight's eyebrows raised as she scanned Michel, the sharp golden hue of her eyes piercing, and Michel could see the fighter within her, buried deep down.
"Damn," the knight had said, and she had actually whistled. "I hadn't expected that to work."

"Lin Zhen," said Yu Xia, leaning over the counter. Lin Zhen's eyebrows rose with unconcealed bemusement. "How's business?"
Lin Zhen visibly tried and failed to suppress her smile. "Just fine. Why, are you looking to finally leave the noodles to us?"
Yu Xia rolled her eyes, turning around so she was leaning her back against the counter so that her own restaurant— a true restaurant, not the little noodle shop Lin Zhen was trying to run— was directly visible on the other side of the road, bustling with activity. "As if," she scoffed, trying to hide her own smile. She was doing a much better visual job than Lin Zhen, she thought, since Lin Zhen couldn't even see her face, but she suspected her smile was audible. "We're booming. Look at us. Not a moment of rest."
Yu Xia heard the soft thump of Lin Zhen's elbows landing on the counter behind her. Lin Zhen was both closer and further away than expected when she spoke, inches from Yu Xia's ear, her breath a soft breeze that lingered across Yu Xia's skin. "Then why are you here?"

"This is a stupid idea," Jamil told Azul drily.
Azul didn't roll his eyes, but Jamil could sense that it was a near thing. "Please, Jamil. Everyone wants to know the ins and outs of the housewardens' lives."
Jamil grit his teeth as he said it. "I'm not a housewarden."
Azul gave Jamil a look that Jamil chose not to decipher. "Ahem. Yes, well, your housewarden is too much of an open book to be of much intrigue, I'm afraid."
"This is a stupid idea," Jamil told Azul again and turned away.
"This is a marvelous idea," Headmage Crowley pronounced to the dismal room of seven— Azul, Riddle, Vil, Idia's tablet, Yuu, Leona and Jamil. "Think of the publicity, and— ahem, it would. Certainly lift the spirits of the Isle, don't you think? A truly noble cause."

Brooklynn nodded as though thoughtful. "The Broker, hm? What's she like?"
The cultist shrank back, eyeing Brooklynn with something that very clearly resembled suspicion. "I'm sorry, I don't think I'm meant to be talking to—"
"It's alright," said a new voice, smooth and confident, and Brooklynn felt every one of her muscles lock up. The newcomer— another cultist, evident from the attire— smiled at Brooklynn. The smile lacked warmth. There wasn't a hint of nervousness to be found on this second cultist.
Brooklynn knew that smile.
She'd never seen it up close for herself, of course, never been victim to it at such close proximity, but she had seen it pinned up on the board at their little bureau, had seen it in newspaper clippings and articles that never saw the light of day. Brooklynn knew the Broker's smile.

Summary
The day Juni died, she'd gone out for a tub of ice cream.
It hadn't been a breakup, nothing quite so banal or relational, but it was as close to heartbreak as Juni suspected she would ever get— the final installation of her favourite video game series had been released and she'd finished it— and so she had figured that she was owed a good tub of ice cream to gorge her sorrows within. She had considered her options; vanilla was too basic, chocolate too normie, strawberry too artificial, honeycomb trying too hard. Cookies and cream had seemed a reasonable middle ground.
Juni hadn't foreseen the fucking truck.

"No," Idia said, completely aware that he sounded like a goddamn lunatic. "No. I'm not doing that."
It was fine when Ortho was around. He provided cover, could seem like the one Idia was mumbling to, but Idia was alone. Usually when alone, he tried to ignore the voices, with varying levels of success, but Great Seven. He needed to make his disapproval verbally known.
You think he's pretty.
Silver lay beneath an apple tree, back against the trunk, one knee propped up and a limp hand curled about it. His other hand lay beside him on the ground, fingers curling gently upwards as though to catch any stray apples. Even under the dappled shade of the tree, the sun's rays slithered through for the sole purpose of glimmering against his hair, his fucking eyelashes, painting the silver iridescent. His face was soft in sleep, lips parted slightly, head tilted to the side, a delicate rosy hue highlighting the tops of his cheekbones. Silver was undeniably ethereal.

Things had been different, this time around. Subtly different, slightly different, and Lu Guang hadn't yet decided if it was time to panic. He'd felt panic bubbling nevertheless.
This was different, too. Not quite so subtle, though still, he supposed, slight. Lu Guang wasn't sure if panic was due yet, but he felt something close to it stifle the air in his lungs.
"Oh," said Cheng Xiaoshi. "Huh. I thought… did we not get a room with two beds?"

This is a dream, he tells himself, because there is no other explanation. He hasn't come here in a long time.

Kim had a favourite bay.
Over the years, it had emptied out, fishers and idlers and the in-between and beyonds clearing out when a few too many of them went missing from obvious siren attacks. Kim had never claimed to be subtle. His kind did not need to be.
Strangely enough, the emptying out of the bay had seemed to only endear it further to Kim. There was a stretch of rocks that littered the edge of the shore, long enough for Kim to stretch himself out upon, for Kim to look up at the sun, feel it leach the water from his skin, his scales. There were no hunters here, and no prey. Kim could let melodies trickle from his tongue, and his only audience would be the crash of the waves and the drift of the clouds and the burn of the sun. He would draw nothing to himself.
Kim's favourite bay was an empty one.
There was someone by Kim's favourite bay.

There was a fox that followed Alicia Wilkershire.
This wasn't the first time Beaford had noticed it. He still thought it was weird as fuck. "Hey," he said, eyeing it warily. "The fox is here."
"Ignore her," Alicia told him, curt and blunt.
"How do you know it's a her?" Beaford asked, as he had before, and probably would again, because Alicia was nothing if not avoidant.
"Just a feeling," Alicia dismissed predictably. "Do you want your ice cream or not?"

Summary
Alicia Wilkershire was mowing the lawn.
The lawn hadn't grown particularly unruly, but it was habit, to mow it on a biweekly basis. Having mowed the lawns, she then went on to trim the hedges with a careful hand, and then to pull out the weeds with a careful eye. She felt, on these occasions, somewhat like a gardener.
It was only a small graveyard. The people that came by were few and far between, and they were quiet besides.
"Alicia! Fancy seeing you here."
The living people, that was.
