Summary
Mint looked out at the road as he waited for Dove to drive by to pick him up from school. Fourteen years old, now, and they'd figured out how to remove the plant from the top of his head with hardly a pinch of pain, so he could feel the chill of the breeze ruffling his hair. He had grown taller, too, hit something of a growth spurt— or sprout, maybe; Mint wasn't sure what was the scientifically accurate way of describing his development— which was still a bit disorientating. The world had grown smaller over the years.
Smaller, and stranger.
Mint blinked. He blinked again.
Mint was seeing things. He knew he was. He had to be. He had to be, because that was— that was his mom. Summary
Dove stared at herself in the mirror.
Her hair had all gone grey. It still hung down to her shoulders, bangs curling above her eyes, a style she had favoured for so many years that she struggled to imagine what she would look like otherwise. Dove lifted a few strands of her hair. Silvery-grey, not a speck of her old brown to be seen. It was still soft, though, soft as down, slipping through her fingers easily. Magnolia's hair had always been hardier, thicker, when Dove would draw her fingers through it early in the morning, the two of them still half-drowned with sleep.
Dove shook the image away. Her hair wasn't the only thing that had changed. Her skin had changed, too, so many more folds slicing into her than there used to be. At the corners of her eyes, framing her mouth. It was… not quite softer, but frailer, somehow. As though it would take only the simple drag of one fingernail across it to break the skin, let the red beneath blossom above.
Dove stared at herself in the mirror. She had grown old.
