Summary
"Don't do your thing."
"What thing?"
"Your thing. The thing where you look at people until they tell you stuff."
Suo actually turns his head at that. His eyebrow goes up. "If I were doing my thing, you'd have told me already."
"See, that's—"
"I'm not doing it," Suo says. "I promise. I'm only sitting here." He means it. Sakura can tell, somehow.
Suo's hands are loose in his lap. There's no smile, and his voice doesn't have the silky edge it gets when he's working on someone. He sounds just a little tired, and careful, and very patient. He has settled in to wait out the rain for as long as it takes. Sakura's bad temper isn't going to move him.
'This is worse,' Sakura thinks. 'I could try to fight being worked over, but I can't fight this.'[ AKA a story of not knowing what love looks like and discovering it all the same ]

Summary
"Anyway, I've genuinely never seen Sakura look as happy as he did eating that breakfast. I almost took a picture."
"Nirei." Somewhere between a warning and a plea.
"I mean it as a compliment!"
"Nirei, shut up—"
"He had this whole soft look on his face, like—"
"Shut up!!"
Umemiya watches the whole thing with delighted patience, then leans back on his stool. "Sakura-chan. Are you trying to make Suo into your housewife?"
The café goes very quiet.
"He'd have to admit to having feelings first," Kotoha offers, unable to resist. "No offense."
"I hate it here," Sakura says to the ceiling.[ Please do not copy to another site without permission. Thank you! ]

Summary
"So," Sakura says to the trellis.
"So?"
"Hypothetically."
"Oh, I love hypotheticals."
"If a guy," Sakura says, "wanted to..." He has to stop. His face is getting hot. He pushes through, because if he stops now he'll never start again. "Ask somebody. Out. Hypothetically. How would he... what would he..."
The watering can stops. Umemiya barely looks up from the spinach.
"Suo, right?"
Sakura whirls around so fast he nearly takes out a planter.
"It's not about anyone, damn it! I said hypothetical!"
"Mhm." Umemiya sets the watering can on the edge of the bed. He's grinning so wide it looks painful. "Of course. Hypothetical guy. Hypothetical somebody. Who has an eyepatch, and who you want to make into your housewife—"
"I don't—"
"—and who you make a great couple with, I said it once and I'll say it again, it warms my heart—"
"I'm leaving!"[ Please do not copy to another site without permission. Thank you! ]

Summary
"You're the most straightforward person I've ever met. You say what you mean, usually at full volume while glaring at somebody. When you're happy, your ears go red. When you're upset, you punch a wall or you leave. You couldn't trick anyone if you tried."
"I could trick people." Sakura sounds slightly indignant.
"You could not," Suo says with enormous fondness. "The things that really hurt come from someone you trusted hiding what they meant. You can't hide anything. It's one of my favorite things about you."
Sakura opens his mouth to argue and finds he has nothing to argue with. His ears, the traitors, are going red. Suo watches them do it with open satisfaction.

Summary
Umemiya sets his gift bag on the old table with the other presents and comes to stand beside Sakura. Kotoha-san is on Sakura's other side, arranging biscuits on a plate.
"It's only something small," Umemiya-senpai says, frowning at his bag. "I didn't even get him condoms."
Sakura chokes on air. Without looking up from the biscuits, Kotoha-san drives an elbow into her adopted brother's side.
"Kidding," Umemiya-senpai wheezes, and goes to help Xie Lian hang Tsugeura's banner over the doorway. Despite the way the letters squeeze unevenly in at the end, Tsugeura beams at it the entire time it goes up.
Sakura is still recovering when something small drifts in from the veranda.
It's a silver butterfly. It makes a lazy loop over the plate of biscuits and settles on Xie Lian's white sleeve. Sakura has seen one exactly like it before, perched on the rim of Hua Cheng's red umbrella on a rainy night, the first time he ever came to this house.
Xie Lian looks down at it and gasps. "They're coming! Everyone, hide!"[ Please do not copy to another site without permission. Thank you! ]

Summary
"You hid behind a daikon?" Hua Cheng sounds unimpressed.
"I wasthe daikon. I hid behind the cabbages. It's different." He rinses a bowl and sets it on the rack. "You should come next time. You'd like seeing him like that."
"I don't follow children around, gēge."
"He's our son."
"Especially not him, except with the butterflies." Hua Cheng ladles soup into a bowl and sets it on the table for Xie Lian. "He notices."[ Please do not copy to another site without permission. Thank you! ]

Summary
Now that Xie Lian is looking, he finds it everywhere. The dumplings have had more ginger and less leek since the summer. The sweet bean buns that used to appear every other week haven't been made since Suo came to live with them, and the dish of black vinegar always seems to end up beside Suo's bowl by the end of a meal. Hua Cheng noticed what their son left on his plate and cooked around it for months without a word to anyone. He changed recipes that have stayed the same for centuries, for a boy who would never have thought to ask.
Xie Lian has to put his chopsticks down.
"Did you change it for me, too?" he asks, a little thickly.
Hua Cheng slides over a small lidded dish that Xie Lian had taken for extra sauce. Inside, the pork is lacquered dark and sweet, exactly as he likes it. "Gēge's has extra sugar."
Xie Lian beams and takes a piece from each. Then an idea strikes him. "I could do that with my buns. A little less sugar, a little vinegar—"
Suo's chopsticks stop again.
"Gēge's cooking cannot be improved upon," Hua Cheng says.[ Please do not replicate or crosspost on another site without permission, and do not use my work to train AI. Thank you! ]
