Summary
Ronan and Adam, side-by-side amongst a maze of clothing racks, were a demonstration of two different types of shabby. Ronan, with his artfully shredded skinny jeans plastered on his long legs that probably cost more than Adam’s monthly rent and a t-shirt that Chainsaw had clawed holes in shoulder looked like a model straight off a photo shoot. Adam with his meticulously kept thrift store buys -- faded jeans a decade outside of trends and a short-sleeved button down with frayed hem that he trimmed this morning but had already managed to fray some more -- looked like he had brought his clothes exactly from where he had bought them. It was grossly unfair.
The unfairness was softened by how much Adam appreciated looking at Ronan looking like that.

Summary
There was a reason he had avoided Lynch since he started at Mountain View. Lynch was trouble, and Adam had enough trouble in his life already. No need to draw attention now; Lynch probably didn’t know Adam existed. Adam had seen his car, seen his expensive clothes, seen a friend picking him up an obnoxious but also glorious orange camaro. People like that didn’t pay attention to people like Adam, living their humble little lives.

“I don’t drink,” Adam said.
Ronan didn’t know what this guy was doing at a frat house party if he didn’t drink, but Ronan was here and wasn’t fraternizing.
“Okay.”
Adam looked Ronan over then, scrutinizing. Ronan smoothed his face to blaize uncaring, which was an easy look to put on. It was one of his well-practiced masks
“You don’t have something to say about that? Everyone always has something to say about that.”
A few years ago, Ronan would’ve taken that bait, but it wasn’t a few years ago.
“It’s your life, man.”
Something shifted in Adam’s expression. Under all the caginess a spark of warmth. Ronan had passed a test.

“New shoes,” Ronan replied. Adam glanced quickly at his feet. Yeah, boots would do that.
“You’re the same height then.”
Ronan raised an eyebrow. “Did you think I would change in a month?”
It had felt longer than a month. New things often did, until they fell into mundane routine. Every day felt new here, and appreciated. It was something Adam had worked on for so long.
