Summary
There were many unexpected things in Evan’s life. Being born, for instance, was unexpected. On a list of unexpected things in his life, being born was the one that topped the list, and that included the time he was told he was actually quite good at singing and the other time where he was cast as the lead in the Christmas show, before dropping out because the thought of performing made him cry.
Actually, scratch that. Being born was not as unexpected as Connor Murphy showing up at his house at half past nine on a Wednesday evening, yelling at Evan to come down and come for a ride with him.
That was very unexpected.
----------------------------In which Connor Murphy and Evan Hansen go for a drive and form something half-okay, half-not okay together.

Summary
It’s just -
The thing was -
No one would miss Connor. No matter how many statistics there were in the world, no one would miss him. How could they?
Because that was who he was, as a person. Not unmissable, but the opposite. He was someone who people were glad to see gone, because he was inherently bad, and atrocious, and fucked up, because he was like a black hole, or a grenade, or something equally as likely to destroy itself and scar everyone who was stupid enough to stand close to him.
Like Evan.

Summary
Because the truth was Zoe had grown used to Connor's absence long before he left. His stays in rehab or mental wards, even just his general desire to be far, far away from people had led to her to accept his lack of presence long before it had been permanent.
But she had never fully accepted the idea that he was gone. She just kept waiting for him to come home. Because the truth was people don't get used to people not being there, not really. They just get used to the permanent state of waiting for someone who won't come.
The truth was she wasn't ready for him to come home.
---
On his 23rd birthday, five years after he went missing, Connor returns home. And Zoe doesn't want to think.

Summary
Maybe he was okay. Maybe he was better.
He finished with as best a flourish as he could, the claps and cheers of the audience washing over him as he tried to search out for Connor again in the crowd, finding his table, and Connor -
Connor was leaving.
Evan wasn’t good at taking risks. Never had been. But sometimes, impulse just grabbed him and whispered in his ear to go.
“You’ve all been great tonight, I hope you’ve had a great time, I’ll be back nice week at the exact same time,” he gabbled into the mike, before hurrying to grab his bag and his guitar case and his coat, not even bothering to put his guitar away as he dashed out of the café into the street, and there he was, walking away and no he wouldn’t, he refused to lose him again -
“Connor!” he yelled, his heart hammering in his chest, and Connor stopped. It was raining, Evan realised, and he shivered as he yelled again. “Connor Murphy!”
And Connor turned. And he stared at Evan.

Summary
He had to leave, fuck, he had to leave, he had to go. There were tears, he was crying, he shouldn’t be crying, he was shaking too much, vision blurred, he kept blinking, trying to clear it, he should leave, he was up, he was grabbing his bag, scrubbing away his tears with his sleeves, the crowd was cheering because Evan was finishing and he was leaving, slipping out the door as easily as he slipped in.
Cold, sharp bullets of rain pierced him as soon as he stepped outside, and he came a little back to himself, but not enough to stop. The need for a smoke burned him, but not there, not in the doorway of a fucking café, so he started to walk, there was a bar down the road, he could just duck into their doorway just for a minute or two, and maybe have a drink -
“Connor!” He froze, heart mid-beat, because of that voice, that voice, that stupid fucking voice -
