Summary
Kai finds himself stuck in a car with his least favorite person for hours upon hours. He doesn't know which is worse: the fact that he's forced to cooperate with their ex-enemy Alberich, or that there's hardly anything to read while they wait for Irene to return.

(Big spoilers:) In this canon-diverging one shot, Alberich survived the purging of the Library's dark core, and after the tentative resolving of a lot of misunderstandings and old resentment, a sort of truce is established between him and the Library. This leads to him cooperating with them on a few tough missions where his dubious skills come in handy - and it wouldn't be the Invisible Library if the person in charge of these tough missions wasn't Irene.
In other words, my excuse to write a lot of Irene, Kai and Alberich interaction :-) -

After being driven out of B-395 by Irene and Kai, Alberich is pissed. So pissed he doesn’t waste a lot of time to fulfill his last promise to Irene – that she’d regret it.

Book two mentions how Alberich was the one who told Lord and Lady Gauntes where to find a dragon to kidnap: This scene imagines their interaction, and tries to explain the way some of Alberich’s chaos-infused Language powers work. Technically there are no big spoilers for anything beyond The Masked City, but my thoughts on Alberich draw a lot from later books, so beware. c:
