He stepped closer, voice lower. “You could affect anything. Anyone.”
She tilted her head at that, curiosity flickering behind her exhausted eyes. “So I’d be invincible?”
“Maybe,” Cecil said with a small shrug. “But only if you want to be.”

And—oh god—what if they both think they’re the father and it turns into a dramatic situation like that soap opera I watch on Thursdays?”
Adam slammed his mug on the table, face pale. “Betsy! Stop it! Don’t go saying outlandish things like that! She’s not pregnant!”

“Eve, you didn’t drag us,” Mark said, following close behind. “I’m the one who said we should talk to your parents. Explain things. Give them the benefit of the doubt.”
Rex snorted as he caught up. “Yeah, well. We gave them the benefit, they gave us psychological damage.”
Eve turned to them at the doorway, her eyes tired and sad. “I told you they suck.”
“You really did,” Rex agreed, jabbing a thumb toward his chest. “And I should’ve listened. Coming from someone whose own dad once asked if he could trade me back to the government for a better cut of steak, that says something.”
Mark gave him a look. “That actually happened?”
“Yup,” Rex said grimly. “T-bone. Medium rare. Said I wasn’t worth well-done.”
