Ubba Ragnarsson has installed King Ceowulf on the throne of Mercia. Though a relative calm has formed between Saxons and Danes, that very calm is threatened by the illusive information broker known only as La Mère des Secrets. Words has reached his ears of a transfer of power to a new Mère, one who prioritizes bastards over selling knowledge to the highest bidder. She has offered to pledge all her resources to the Kingdom of Mercia.
But why would this new leader make such a dramatic change to an organization known to be staunchly neutral? To what purpose does this serve her? How can she help Mercia? A swarm of questions flurry Ubba's mind, and knows the only way to resolve them is to see this arrangement through. This is a fanfic of Beautiful Decline. I am so obsessed with the series, it's consumed my Ivarr fantasies. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it, I make multiple references to it in this story.
Eivor and his crew are heading to Norway to retrieve Sigurd. Very little to do with Eivor and Sigurd. Story takes place on the sail to Norway, on the longship about Ceolbert and Ivarr. From Ceolbert's POV, does he want it bad enough?
