The Order of the Stick: thoughts on stats in 5th Edition by JotunPhilosopher

Summary
I got into this lovely little webcomic recently, as an offshoot of my interest in Dungeons & Dragons in general – it’s extremely well-crafted in plot, worldbuilding and characterisation, and is very accessible even without being completely au fait with the 3.5 edition mechanics on which the comic’s world runs.
One of the interesting aspects of the comic is the main characters' poor build optimisation relative to their effectiveness. Now, I’m mainly used to Fifth Edition (pre-2024) mechanics, which are a lot less complicated than 3.5e mechanics (I tried to read the 3.5e Player’s Handbook and went cross-eyed from overload very quickly), which got me thinking – how would the Order’s builds translate into 5e? My thoughts are below!
Spoilers abound, because it’d be difficult to make the discussion remotely coherent otherwise XD
Tally ho!

Summary
Roy stood still for a moment, straining his ears to listen for any remaining goblins who might be arriving late. Once he was satisfied, he sheathed his sword, a deep sigh draining from his lungs. “Belkar’s gonna be so mad that—“
Vaarsuvius dropped like a stone.
In which Belkar refuses to share his possessions, Vaarsuvius starts bleeding out, and Roy is pretty damn sure he will never split the party again. Ever.

“Are ye sure ye don’t haf somethin’ ta admit?” Durkon asked finally, once the silence between them had grown thick and disquieting. All around, the Azurites trickled back to their assigned posts, muttering gloomily about their prospects in battle.
“Positive,” Belkar huffed, eager to escape whatever afterschool special Durkon was trying to trap him in. “But since you clearly think otherwise, just tell me what I’m supposed to admit so we can pretend we had a bonding moment and be on our merry way.”
“Is tha wha’ ye really want me ta do?”
“If it’ll get you off my back? Hell yeah.”
“Fine.” Durkon folded his arms, gaze turning stern. His eyes bore into Belkar, peeling back all his layers until he felt that Durkon could see the rawest, deepest part of him. Belkar kept sharpening his dagger, harder and faster and harder and faster and harder and faster. Anything to distract himself from those goddamn eyes.
“I think yer in love wit’ Vaarsuvius.”

Summary
The town around Kraagor's statue is made of people forgetting the past. It's made of people who aren't members of the Order, or paladins of the Sapphire Guard, or the crew of the Mechanae, or anyone else who found out what the Gates were before said Gates got sealed away, people who aren't any of those things, not anymore.
Pasts are easy to outrun, easy to avoid, easy to bury. People? People are a little harder to outrun, especially when you're a goblin cleric and an elven wizard trying to avoid the ex who learned how to ranger from your parents, the man who's entire family you accidentally murdered (even if you did fix it later), the brother you killed for what turned out to be absolutely nothing, in the end, and the paladin who burned your village down.

Summary
Takes place between 879 "Running on Empty" and 880 "Getting the Message"
Somehow, Belkar survived where Durkon died. He's in no fit state to fight, or even walk, but that isn't stopping him from crawling along to try and tell the rest of the Order what horrible fate has befallen their cleric.
But the pyramid is a big place, and it takes a long time for him to pull his mangled body along. Woozy from blood loss, Belkar finds himself giving in to one of the most disturbing hallucinations he's ever faced, and all he can do is hope to get back to the rest of the team and make this rapidly worsening situation their problem, instead of his.
All the while Belkar keeps telling himself that nothing he feels is real. It's all just part of the game.

Falling for people sucks. Getting mauled sucks worse. He's still wondering if getting stuck--dying, beaten, and bloody--with the object of his affections sucks even more or less.
