Summary
“It’s… difficult to talk about,” Johanna went on quietly, sniffling again. Her gaze had turned back up, staring blankly at the wall beside the TV. “I can’t tell you all of it; maybe someday, when you’re older, but I’ll tell you what I can now if you promise me one thing.”
“What thing?” Hilda asked quietly. Johanna let out a long breath, a little shaky.
“That you don’t tell anyone else about this,” she said, her tone turning even more serious. And Hilda knew instantly that she had been right, that this was something incredibly serious, something very personal to her mother. And as much as she wished she could know the full thing, whatever Johanna was willing to tell her now would have to be enough.
On the day she wins the Safety Patrol Student Essay Contest, Hilda discovers her mother has a painful shared history with Erik Ahlberg.

"I just wanted to make sure you were safe," she admitted, finally taking that one step closer. "If I don't know where you are or what's going on, then I can't be sure you're okay."
Hilda scuffed at the sand again, sniffling, then spoke back briskly. "That didn't used to matter," she began, before suddenly whirling back, finally facing her mother; her eyes were wet with unshed tears. "When we lived in the wilderness, I only had to be back before dark. I met trolls, I rode woffs; even that's more dangerous than Raven is!"
When Raven has to leave for the winter, his departure brings up some buried hurt between Hilda and her mum.
