She honestly doesn't know what more surprising, that revelation, or the fact he's apparently not the only pans-dimensional conceptual entity she helped out. She's new to all this, but apparently there's a smaller timeloop between her and, well, Time herself, so forget being confident. Time knows she can help her younger self.

Summary
Her beloved husband and wife certainly disagree, but she herself has no real regrets about how her life as Shiraori ended.
Her soul had survived even if it got a bit uncertain at the end after all.
What she isn't grateful for is these ‘Gates’ that keep opening to wreak havoc on the world. Her weakened state sure as hell complicates things, but she's never been the sort to stand idly by. Regardless of how much her soulmates wish she would.
Nor the fact that while there's not a lot she can do about them, she isn't completely unable to help, much as her beloved soulmates may loathe it. She did ‘awaken’ as this universe refers to people gaining powers. Set a world record for weakest ever recorded mind, but that was to be expected given the soul damage she suffered and the way hers was tightly coiled in on itself trying to protect itself and focus its energy in ways to heal.
She may not have power, but she certainly has skill and experience to help with after all.
And she will, given the weaker awakened, these ‘Hunters’ as the ones who deal with the ‘Gates’ are called, suffer the highest casualty rate.

Summary
Hello!
Darker Than Black is one of my favorite animes and I loved Gaiden where we got to see into Hei and Yin's time together while on the run from the Syndicate. I felt that there was enough time between episode 1 and episode 2 that I could fit in a little story along with a possible explanation for how they got to Hong Kong. There's some easter eggs as well as callbacks to characters and moments through season 1. I wrote this with the hope that it could satisfy folks who not only wanted more of Hei and Yin together but to also explore the world. I really did my best to capture the character dialogue in a way that I thought made sense for the characters.
As of 3/7/2026, I'm not done with this just yet. I have one more chapter to write that wraps up the side story with another contractor fight before the beginning of episode 2. I'd really like to continue this for other parts of the show as I have quite a few ideas. Regardless, I hope you enjoy it even though it's short and if you have any constructive critique for me, I'd love to hear it. Thanks for reading!

Toshiko honestly isn't even all that surprised to wake up in yet another life once she's dealt with the creeping overpopulation, the loss of morals, and numerous attempts to get rid of her one way or another. Her born specialization Elemental Sight's defined end point, lacking any indicators related to death had sort of hinted at it after all. Magic doesn't tend to make such errors.
Would've been nice if she was human though, mind. Now excuse her while she has a quiet behind the scene meltdown for the first part of her life regarding some questions about her soulmates.
