Summary
The architects of Lumen once descended to the surface to breathe life into the barren lands. They watched upon them as they grew, trimmed their imperfections, and watched over Lumen as stars in the night sky. But just as easily have they have abandoned them, condemning the surface dwellers to ward off the Drowned. Why revere them as gods, if they lift not a finger to fight their own enemies and instead project their sufferings unto the mortal plane? Allow me to answer those questions. What unspoken words and actions have transpired since then? I see the inner turmoil that stirs in their mind. Just how far will you go?
In Place of Starlight follows the story of many different characters fighting for different philosophies and reasons to control and shape Lumen's fate. Following two catastrophic events known as the Grand Fissures, a mission into the Second Layer of the Depths goes askew as Deepdelver Halcyon Kalinof is sent off the edge of the Void. In an unimaginable turn of events, he uncovers the disaster of the Old World, sparking an old conflict that has lasted over millennia, bringing the Old World and the New World into an unavoidable judgement day.
