“Both. Both is good,” they say, before realizing that memes don’t exist anymore and despairing. There goes a good 80% of their humor.
“Zombie’s a weird name.”
“I don’t need to hear that coming from a guy named Monkey D. Luffy.”
He pouts at them, poking at their aching cheeks.
Smiling, smiling, smiling.

“So, Captain.”Luffy grins at the title, all big and goofy. “Yeah, Zombie?”
“Should we be concerned about the big ass whirlpool? Because I feel like we should be.”
“Huh.”
The two of them stare at it. They (Zombie, their name is Zombie now because they’re a fucking dumbass who sucks at naming things) thinks they should probably be more worried about impending doom, but they can’t be bothered. They’ve died once. Which sucked, but also? They fucking died . Worst case scenario has already happened, so what do they have to be worried about? Plus, Luffy survived it fine in canon, so it can’t possibly be that bad.
“Here, climb in!” Luffy says, having emptied out a barrel. Zombie looks at the barrel, looks at Luffy’s grinning face, looks at the whirlpool, and then looks back at the barrel.
“Fuck it, we ball.”

“Can you? Probably. Should you is a different matter entirely. The whole system is corrupt to hell and back, and until you’re strong enough to stand at the top, they own you. Even if they tell you to sink a refugee ship or massacre a town or kill pregnant women on a hunch. I’m not saying to give up on your dream. Just to think it through, yeah?”Coby looks at them, eyes wide and face pale. Luffy looks at them too, eyes dark and utterly unreadable. They fight the quiet feeling that their captain’s eyes see far too much of them.
“But…the Marines are heroes!”
“Some of them,” Zombie concedes. “And some of them are evil. Nothing’s black and white, kiddo. Especially not people. If you want to be a Marine, then be a Marine. If you want to be a hero, then think things through and decide what pieces of yourself you’re willing to lose in pursuit of that dream.” And then they look at his face, drawn and pensive, and pull up a smile. They drop a hand in his cotton candy-colored hair. “Or you can tell me to go fuck myself. I’m kinda chatting out my ass, to be perfectly honest.”
Coby sends them such a scandalized look that they have to laugh.

Holy shit , One Piece body proportions are kind of fucking terrifying to behold in real life. Alvida is stupid fucking tall, and Zombie has experience with tall people. Their littlest brother is almost seven foot, for fuck’s sake! And Alvida’s not quite that tall, but she sure fucking feels like it with with how wide she is.

Dinner was full of excited discussion. Every crew member who’d met Koby adored him. Sanji even managed to not be jealous by how much the girls liked him. The crew members who hadn’t met him had heard only good things about him from the others, so everyone was excited to have him on board. They all had ideas about how they wanted to win him over and convince him that being a pirate was great and that kidnapping wasn’t the worst recruitment method they could have gone with. Usopp wanted to teach him how to shoot a slingshot, Franky wanted to show him his workshop, and Robin wanted to tell him about the Poneglyphs (so that he couldn’t go back to the world government even if he escaped). Zoro wanted to teach him swordsmanship, Sanji wanted to teach him to cook, Jinbe and Brook just wanted to drink tea and have friendly conversation with him, and Nami and Luffy both wanted to hold him close and shower him with affection. Chopper was pretty sure they were all a bit insane, but he liked that about them. He just wanted to make sure Koby got proper medical care and hopefully be friends if Koby wanted.
After dinner, Luffy went back to the med bay to check on Koby. He was still asleep. Luffy smiled fondly at him, brushing a strand of pink hair out of his face. He leaned down and planted a kiss on his forehead. When he lifted his head back up, Koby was looking back at him, eyes wide and terrified.

A webbed hand landed on his shoulder. “Glad to have you back!” Jinbe exclaimed with a grin.
“Right,” Koby mumbled, looking at the ground. He should feel terrified to be back in their hands after having just gotten away, but for some reason, he didn’t. That hand on his shoulder should feel like a threat, but it didn’t. He should want to go back to the Marines, but he doesn’t.
His hands balled up into fists at his side. “I-I think you guys were right. I don’t belong with the Marines.”
Suddenly, all eyes were on him.
Robin smiled at him and said, “I’m glad.”
“Finally,” Sanji said with a small chuckle.
“You really mean it?” Chopper said, hugging his leg.
“About time,” Usopp added.
Brook just yelled, “Yohohohohohooooo.”
“Super!” Franky yelled.
Zoro didn’t say anything, just giving him a knowing smile.
Luffy, on the other hand, looked downright confused. “Huh?” He said. “Of course you don’t belong with Marines. You belong with us, dummy.”
Koby laughed a small, incredulous laugh. “Yeah, I guess you guys were right the whole time.”

Koby shook his head. “I just don’t belong with the Marines anymore. Maybe I never did.”
“And you think you belong with a crew of pirates? With my criminal grandson?”
Koby thought about it. They’d done so much to hurt him. They’d taken him from his friends, kept him against his will, and drugged him. That didn’t just go away, but they cared about him far more than the government ever would, and they would never ask him to go against his own morals for the sake of some imaginary justice. They would never let him leave—he knew that—but maybe he could accept that if it meant he got to be a part of their family. Did he belong with them? He didn’t know for sure, but if he went back with Garp, the marines likely wouldn’t let him leave either, not for a long time, so he had to answer now, and he had to do it definitively.
“Yeah, I belong with them,” he said.
