There was a whisper in the citadel when the child was first brought there, that a monster had been born to the Red Rider. A babe bearing a monster's shape and nature is a punishment from the gods, visited upon Morzan for his hubris—for daring to wield greater influence than the king when he had been alive.
Lady Thaven finds herself looking in on Morzan's stain at night.

The king had bestowed upon Morzan’s cur the royal apartments, a rare honor for his ward. The boy cannot lack for comfort. No rooms in the citadel are as well placed, or possess more space or insulation. While other nobles were relegated to standard quarters, this distinction bred jealousy and envy among them, murmurs of discontent echoing through the citadel.
She thinks, whenever she considers the boy’s comfort, that it cannot be terrible for him to be surrounded by other boys, even if they are all older than him. The common folk who work in the castle all like him well enough, to be sure.
