"Lack of sleep was a regular occurrence with the paladins, what with continuously being on edge because of Zarkon and the Galra Empire. But somehow Lance could always find a way to get at least five hours of sleep every night cycle. This night was different though. Lance couldn’t sleep."

The Star Jar was a simple concept, but Lance still prided himself with making it— even if it wasn't his idea to begin with. The Jar wasn't very full,—it never had been— and he wished more than anything that it was. A star for a smile, as he would say, but there weren't many smiles from the boyfriend in question, so there weren't many stars in the jar. Keith doesn't smile nearly enough, and Lance would know, seeing how empty his jar still was.
Maybe one day he can help fill that jar to the top.

Lance piped up, stepping into view as the other male jumped in surprise, swiveling around with a terrified look, thick eyebrows disappearing beneath black fringe. Truthfully, Lance didn't mean to scare the poor guy, but he wouldn't say he was exactly sorry about it; It actually made the other look even cuter. "Sorry, I didn't mean to spook you" He apologized, coming to a halt beside the stranger, smile widening in silent hospitality. Dark brows finally emerged from hiding, the eyes beneath blinking furiously to a nervous mantra, "Hippos".
Confusion etched its way on the Cuban's face, nose twitching at the statement and overpowering smell of something sweet, it must have been the boy's cologne. "Hippos are my favorite animal" He muttered, staring at the floor with jittery fingers, feet shuffling awkwardly with the interaction. A moment passed, then another, all leading up to an embarrassing giggle that Lance would later deny, his body lurching with the absolutely adorable news. The once nervous male suddenly became hostile, head swiveling sideways to send a glare, lips thinning into a line, "What?!".

It’s not vicious enough to be called anger, he knows how to handle that. This is a more complacent thing that sits and waits within grasp just to trod enough to be able to elude his full comprehension. He wants to scream at its mockery. He wants to pry open its secrets even if it costs him bloodied fingers and cracked joints. Needs to know the definition of its presence because each minute he waits is another lost to the echoing sound of footsteps that haunt his every dream. Another tick closer to the moments that he knows to be paramount when he cannot manage this self-projection calmly. By the time he believes his eyes can no longer tear from its ferocity, he finds himself corrected when the next person he meets fails to leave him willingly.
