There was a lot of inane chatter in daily life- a lot of small talk and forced conversations that were dead on arrival. He never had those with Graham, not once, not even back in Cambridge when they knew next to nothing about each other. They only talked when they had something to say, and there were plenty of times when they didn’t.

“What?” John says. He must have heard him wrong, or maybe it was an accident, something that slipped out out of habit, certainly not meant for him-
“Love you, John,” Michael repeats, and although it’s sleepy and quiet, it sounds decisive, purposeful.
