It is a truth universally acknowledged that a new neighbor has the power to upset the balance of everyday life with one small action, or, really, just their presence as a fundamentally foreign object. Jim, of course, isn’t about to let anything go out of whack just like that. His carefully crafted world, consisting of his daughter, his best friend, his fields and his machinery, is a thing in itself, and it will not suddenly start changing because he keeps running into that book author everywhere or because Teth’s art teacher has something to tell him.

Of course, Jim eventually finds out that his cat is not a normal cat. And of course, they end up falling in love.

When Spock first encountered Earth concepts of gender identity it had seemed a cruel fate, that even here, they were stuck between two worlds.
They've never talked to anyone about this aspect of themself. After all, there is no logical reason to disclose such information, and they have nothing to gain by such an action. Pronouns are merely words. They know who they are, and it is irrational to feel any better or worse depending on something so insignificant.
But Jim is a perceptive son of a bitch, and Spock is off balance. They supposed it was only a matter of time. They never intended to keep it a secret, after all. It is merely that it is entirely without consequence..
