think you are mistaking Japanese etiquette with Chinese etiquette. They would use their full names, specially in the case of very short names like Guang and Ling because it could be awkward, this is the most conventional way to refer to someone. In China is not really "first name" and "last name", but "given name" and "family name", and family names are for very formal contexts, like when interacting with much older people or authority figures: "Teacher (last name)", or how Captain Xiao calls Cheng Xiaoshi "Xiao Cheng" (little Cheng, Xiao in China is used similar to "-chan" in Japanese. Funny that his name already contains "Xiao"). Family names never go alone.Showing special closeness.

The stairs creak softly under his feet. Cheng Xiaoshi probably doesn’t expect him to be back yet: not for the next fifteen minutes. He’s most likely slumped back on his bed scrolling down the endless chasm of social media while he waits for Lu Guang to return home. He could be more productive — both of them know this — but getting Cheng Xiaoshi to work after 6pm is like shovelling a camel into a household recycling bin: impossible, unless said work is posting embarrassing pictures of Lu Guang online for ‘marketing purposes’.
Lu Guang squints up at the blinding light that spills from the open slither of their bedroom door into the dim stairwell. A gentle melody drifts from the doorway, quiet against the blanket of silence enveloping the house. It sounds like a voice but it’s too far away to be clear yet.

Lu Guang should have realised that Cheng Xiaoshi could sing. After the job with Xu Shanshan, it had been obvious there was skill behind that voice - skill that belonged to Cheng Xiaoshi - but some things just don’t seem real till you hear them with your own ears. Sometimes you don’t see the things that have been there all along, until they’re laid down in front of you letter by letter.
