This was the other reason Haiji couldn't seem to tell Kakeru to stop coddling him. Lately he got reactions like this, and found that he couldn't get enough of them.

Hana's hand tightens almost painfully on Haiji's shoulder, and judging by his wince, on Kakeru’s shoulder as well. But Haiji knows that Hana is kind. Hana wouldn't throw Haiji under the bus."Why don't you two share?" Hana is evil. Hana threw him under the bus, got into the driver's seat, and is now doing sick figure eights over his prone corpse. Her evil little eyes gleam with self satisfaction.
"What a good idea!" he says, instead of challenging Hana to a duel on the spot like he wants to. He’d probably lose anyway.
In Kakeru's fourth year of university, Haiji joins the Kansei University Track Club during their summer training camp. He's determined to relax and Be Normal around Kakeru, but forces outside his control are making this very, very difficult for him.

Little by little, this room had become his home. The rustling of leaves outside his window, the conversations, laughs and fights of his housemates, Nira's barking... Soon, Haiji wouldn't hear any of that anymore. This room would be a home to someone else, as if Haiji had never been there. He looked at the pile of labeled cardboard boxes in the right corner of the room. On top of them, the running shoes he hadn't dared touch yet. Those were for last. A shiver ran down his spine.
The day before leaving Aotake, Haiji sorts out his running shoes.

"His brows knotted together, Kakeru took a seat next to Haiji, gently placing a hand around him. Now he also looked at the laptop's screen and that explained everything: the video Haiji was watching was paused, the camera showing Kakeru's back. At his first Hakone Ekiden. Not much before the end of his section. Kakeru recognized the tape immediately, he watched it too many times.
Kakeru stayed silent for a moment then tightened his hug a bit and he asked as casually as he could: "Would you like to continue?"
Haiji exhaled slowly, a little chuckle escaping his lips. "Of course." A moment of silence. "But I'm not really able to..." His voice became low by the end of his sentence and he looked away."or
Haiji never could watch the full tape of their Hakone Ekiden but nearly five years later, he gives it a try. He's no longer alone and not being okay is okay - as there will be someone to catch him.
