“I often wonder why Quartermasters bother to tell me that,” 007 replied, his tone one of gentle amusement. “They’re not sending me to Argentina for a sightseeing tour, you know.”
Q rolled his eyes, leaning into his irritation. “Every other agent manages to return their equipment in one piece,” he snapped. “You might be able to dazzle M into giving you a pass, but I don’t work that way. I take pride in my work and I expect agents to do the same.”
He was a little surprised at the vehemence in his own voice, and even more surprised by the broad grin that spread across 007’s features. Head cocked to one side, Bond gave him a long, appraising look that raised the hairs on the back of his neck.
“Pride,” he said at last, his voice soft as velvet. “Yes, of course. You would.”
Needled, Q shot back, “You haven’t the slightest idea what I would or wouldn’t, 007.” The conversation had veered into uncomfortable territory, and he scrambled to escape. “Just look after it,” he said, making a speedy retreat to his office. He could feel 007’s eyes on his back the whole way.

As he was queuing up, someone leaving with their coffee jostled him.
A vaguely familiar voice said, “I beg your pardon.”
“No harm—” Q began and saw that the man who’d bumped into him was Raoul Silva, “—done.” Raoul’s hair was dark, though more grey than Q remembered it. Not the odd blonde wig he’d affected when he attacked MI6 weeks before.
Silva smiled at Q, “You’re too kind,” he said.

“Why not just kidnap me,” said Q dully, “Seems so much easier than whatever it is you’re doing.”Silva smiled a self-satisfied smile, “If I kidnapped you,” he purred and stepped close to Q. “They’d know you were lost.”
