Summary
For years, Odysseus had thought about how he would greet her. What he would tell her, and later, how he would even explain himself to her. Yet, now, as she stood in front of him – not close enough – he did not know what to say. Before, they had never needed words as much. Their minds were as one, a glance, a simple action, it would be enough.
Would it be the same even now?

“Do you remember the feast we promised?” Eurylochus asked, and Odysseus nodded. “Most of the men would stay and contribute to the arrangements. Pay our respects to the god to whom we may owe our lives.”
Odysseus waited. Most.
“After the celebration, they would request a final act of generosity from you.”
“They want ships,” Odysseus said, the moment he realised this. Of course they did. Soft beds and warm meals or not, they had families to return to. They had miles to put between themselves and him—and those who were at home on Ithaca, well, they would likely try to go about their lives without ever encountering Odysseus again.
It looked like it pained Eurylochus to say it aloud, to mention this thing that had hung over them all along. “Yes.”
“And what of the others?”
Eurylochus bit his lip for a moment, a flash of white teeth on dahlia-black ground. “The others would leave soon. Before the feast.”

Summary
“Telemachus,” Penelope said, passing a loving hand over her—their—son’s head. “This is your father.”
Odysseus heard the words as if underwater. He couldn’t believe he was hearing them at last, was seeing his son grown nearly as tall as him, that boyish face lighting up without hesitation, without a moment of doubt. He thought he might hesitate, that he’d keep his hands firm at his sides until Telemachus set the pace, careful not to intrude. He’d never really known his father, after all. But Telemachus bounced, at once caught up in an excitement that made Odysseus ache.
“He came back?” he asked, bright-eyed. Then, to Odysseus: “You came back!”
He had the voice of a growing boy, breaking on some syllables—even more so, it seemed, when he was excited. And it was all worth it, then. That pure, shining joy, the way there was not a second’s worth of disbelief. Odysseus’ eyes stung, and he hardly had enough time to open his arms before Telemachus was pushing himself between them.

Summary
He’s tired. Odysseus is so exhausted he feels an inch from death, ready to curl up, close his eyes, and never open them again. He’s ready to die and just hope to all the gods that he finds Penelope in the afterlife. He wants a break for once in his godforsaken life. At the moment, the prospect of walking into the sea and letting himself sink beckons to him, tempting as the siren who impersonated his wife.

Summary
It’d been seven years since Odysseus had returned home, and he’d never been happier. His kingdom was thriving, his family was safe, and Athena was helping to prepare Telemachus to take his place as the next King of Ithaca.
It’d been two weeks since he and Penelope were sitting together in the garden, watching Athena and Telemachus spar. Odysseus felt a deep thrill of joy every time he called out to his son to tell him how to improve his footwork or to tell him how proud he was of him or to warn him of Athena’s next strike.
“Boo!” He said teasingly as the two stopped for a breather. Athena sent him a smirk as Telemachus ran over to his parents, where he’d dropped his water flask.
“Oh, you think you can do better, dad?” Telemachus’s grin was just as mischievous and daring as Penelope always said Odysseus’s was.
Or, Ody is out of practice and Athena suggests he and Penelope spar out by the forest while she teaches Telemachus. Shenanigans ensue.
