"You bring all flowers...?" he asked, incredulous.
Workers would pick flowers in the fields for the warriors, and warriors would pick them for Batari. She would pick them for Suxli and Mensos themselves, and then pour the tincture she prepared into a pool of water so that by reflecting in it the Sun and Moon could draw on her offering. It was a sign of respect and submission.
Takkar was a chief. He outranked him abundantly, and it wasn't his place to bring flowers to someone like him, even more now that his role as general wasn't worth anything!
Still, Takkar nodded proudly and the scar on his lip rippled. His features were hard, but his expression soft.
Roshani nervously shifted his gaze to him, searching for an explanation that he couldn't find. He didn't understand and it was frustrating. His eyes leaped to the ground and he found himself staring at his own hands. One was smeared with dirt and clutching the bouquet of flowers, the other still covered in dripping blue dye.
There could be no other explanation. Takkar was challenging him. Bringing the colors of war to a lower rank was the same as saying take your weapon and fight. -

"Tu portati tutti fiori…?" chiese Roshani, incredulo.
I fiori li raccoglievano i lavoratori nei campi per i guerrieri ed i guerrieri per Batari. Lei li coglieva per Suxli e Mensos stessi, e versava la tintura che preparava in una pozza d'acqua così che specchiandosi in essa il Sole e la Luna potessero attingere alla sua offerta. Era un segno di rispetto e sottomissione.
Takkar era un capo. Lo superava abbondantemente di rango e non era suo compito portare i fiori ad uno come lui, nemmeno se fosse stato ancora un generale!
Eppure, Takkar annuì fiero e la cicatrice sul suo labbro si increspò. I suoi lineamenti erano duri, ma la sua espressione soffice.
Roshani spostò nervosamente lo sguardo su di lui cercando una spiegazione che non riuscì a trovare. Non capiva ed era frustrante. I suoi occhi balzarono a terra e si ritrovò a fissarsi le mani. Una era sporca di terra e stringeva il mazzo di fiori, l'altra ancora coperta di tintura azzurra gocciolante.
Non poteva esserci altra spiegazione. Lo stava sfidando. Portare i colori della guerra ad un rango più basso equivaleva a dire prendi la tua arma e combattiamo.- Language:
