Yandros’s eyes began to work their way through shades of blue and flashing silver, bordered by black. “You don’t remember this, do you?” His tone was not mocking, but regretful.
“No,” Tarod confessed, with a strange sense of anticipation. He let his hand raise and press to Yandros’s still chest in a mirror image. No heartbeat or breath animated him. Thumbing over the fabric, which was like none he had ever felt, Tarod said, “I remember this life.”
It was not entirely true; he wanted to see what Yandros would do.

Now standing on his own two feet, Tarod began to fall almost immediately; he had found in the waking world that he could not control his limbs, and the same proved true in the dreaming.
“What have they done to you, my brother?” Yandros murmured, as the wall dragged itself several feet closer, so Tarod could lean on it. Which one of them had done that? Tarod could not tell. Nothing that had happened was something Tarod consciously desired, and yet the dream seemed immensely reactive to his stray thoughts. And perhaps Yandros was, too, for he was still cupping Tarod’s face. “Do you still think you can get out of this on your own?”
