For twenty years, she has dreamt of this moment. Dreamt of the moment her husband would return, finally back by her side. She’s been clinging to this hope for so, so long, staring out at the sea from their balcony each night and praying to every God she knows of that she would see his ship on the horizon. Holding off these suitors because she knew he would return to her, that he would fight tooth and nail and conquer the Gods themselves to get back to them. And now it’s finally happening.
He’s different than she remembers, dressed in an old cloak and drenched in the blood of her suitors. His arms are scattered with scars, far more than he had before he left all those years ago. His eyes are tired. Disregarding the dark bags beneath, there is a heavy sense of exhaustion in them, the weight of twenty years of being away from his home. “Is it really you, my love? Have my prayers been answered?”
“Penelope” he breathes out, his gaze softening, a flood of emotion overtaking the exhaustion as he takes a step forward, into their room.
