Maya can see the shadow of Carina, but what she hears breaks her heart.
Carina shifts again, words on the tip of her tongue about to spill into the otherwise silent room. “No.”
Her words start small, but the distressed sounds become more prominent.
“You can’t go. You promised.”
Carina’s words turn into heartbreaking whispers.
“You left me. You left me alone; you sent me away. Why did you do that?”
Carina’s voice cracks at the end of her sentence. Maya feels tears prick at the corner of her eyes, threatening to fall so freely.
