Summary
Fear, Jon had been told, over and again - by other people, by the media, by implication, by instinct - was something which held you back. He tended to agree with this assessment; but not at all with the peculiarly widespread assumption that this meant it was something to be avoided.

Summary
“You, Jon, are the last point of earthly contact for these tortured souls, the bridge between their mortal lives and the ungraspable regions beyond. The least you could do is to smile occasionally. Or at least drop that ‘I’d rather be chewing wasps’ expression.” Elias had narrowed his eyes, as Jon scowled at the floor. “Yes, that’s the one.”

Summary
“Man, I can’t believe she’s actually leaving. I kind of thought of her as a constant, you know? Like death and taxes. And wasps.”
In which the team are superheroes, in a football-style League; and Jon thinks that being promoted to Captain might be easier, if he didn’t have to deal with his predecessor conspicuously judging him.

Summary
“So … you wouldn’t be interested in just not being devastatingly evil, then?”

Starting with Jon.
“I’ll take that as a no.”

Summary
And, what was more, there were far more shelves than he had expected - far more archive than he had expected, as he kept on turning corners and finding new ones, the shapes of them all wrong; leering and looping all around him, like some surreal lasso.
But, as it was ridiculously fanciful to consider that you might have wandered into an M.C. Escher drawing that wanted to eat you, Jon spent far too long steadfastly ignoring all of this, before he tried to go back.
And by then, of course, it was much too late.
